I think that statement may be a little misleading... the tutorial is for creating a BizDoc from an XML schema, (which describes the constraints for a conforming XML instance). There is also an option to create a BizDoc from a WSDL, starting in 5.3.

There isn't a "one-click" option to create a BizDoc from an XML instance. However, you can simply create an empty BizDoc (without a schema reference) with the New -> BizDocument menu option or the New BizDocument button. Then you can use the Insert XML menu (on right click) to insert XML from any file. (You can delete the <Element> tag that is put in as a placeholder.)

This creates a BizDoc containing your XML to be mapped. if you need your element to be the root of the BizDoc, then you may have to make some additional modifications such as renaming the root element. You may want to consider using xa:response instead, to return the element you imported, after any transformation. (This is especially useful if you have large complex processing, a lot of intermediate processing, and/or multiple namespaces.)

I often use a bottom-up approach in large projects and start with an empty BizDoc. Then I use the Edit button for Source and Target XML on the various BizComp wizards, to import smaller portions of XML relevant to that BizComp. Eventually, the BizDoc returns the aggregated result from multiple BizComps.

It seems in the focus on our "contract-first" design approaches that we have focused on the schema and wsdl, and not as much on XML instances. You might want to add a Feature Request to our SourceForge Tracker, for the capability to generate a Bizdoc directly from an XML file. (In the meantime, you can use one of the approaches above which takes just a couple extra steps.)
