Are ESBs Over-used? by billm

Joe McKendrick and David Linthicum have been carrying on a dialog on their respective blogs about ESBs and whether thy are, "perhaps overused, overhyped, and are in many cases not a good fit for an SOA".

Joe's posting, "Enterprise Service Busted?"  does a great job of summarizing some of the thoughts on the issue and includes this poll:

Are ESBs an effective platform for SOA?

  • It doesn't really matter -- SOA should be oblivious to underlying technology (44%)
  • No, they create costly messes (26%)
  • Yes, they provide a ready solution (26%)
  • Other -- add your comments to TalkBack (4%)

ESB's do make SOA way more complicated than it has to be.  XAware composite data services are often deployed along with ESBs, providing easier means of creating and managing data access services and somewhat simplifying that aspect of working with ESBs.  XAware is also often used as a starting point for SOA independent of ESBs, service-enabling existing data systems and using business processes web appliations that call these data services.  That can be a much simpler way of getting started with SOA.
