ROAResource Oriented Architecture 27 Mar 2008 10:07 AM
ROA and XAware (TSSJS Day 1) by tferguson

Yesterday I attended the first day of TheServerSide Java Symposium (TSSJS). The morning started with the keynote about why the near future will be about languages, mostly about Domain Specific Language (DSL) implemented in a dynamic (ruby, groovy, etc.) language layer sitting on top of your stable language like Java. The first breakout session I attended was on performancetuning the JVM. The main theme was about how because of the original performance issues in Java 1.1, we have many misconceptions about allocating objects, garbage collection and pooling of objects. The performance of today’s JVM makes most tweaking and pooling counterproductive.
The rest of the day I spent going to different sessions and the two that most struck me were given by Brian Sletten a partner at Zepheira, LLC, having to do with moving on from SOA to ROA or Resource Oriented Technology. Two of the very key factors to this are that everything (Documents, Data, Resources, and Concepts) are given names that are addressable via a URI, and that those names are resolvable. Or course REST is one of the huge enabling factors behind this. I highly encourage you to read presentations from him. XAware fits nicely as a technology that helps enable you to present your data as a resource in your ROA. You can easily expose your files, RDBMS, Cobol application, etc. as an addressable BizView, and in that BizView you can determine to do different things based on the REST verb. XAware provides the address and ability to resolve the address into your data.
