SOA Success Starts with the Data by billm

In his recent Real World SOA post "Using a Common Data Model with SOA", David Linthicum discusses best practice for accessing and managing data in an SOA. David rightly points out, "[t]he data is the single most important component of an SOA..." Too many SOA implementations pay too little attention to data access. Those who have been down this road have discovered that the failure to properly architect and implement a data aggregation/abstraction and data services layer will kill the agility that they hoped to get from SOA. As David points out, "[s]imply tightly coupling the data to the services won't serve the notion of agility, and you're really not solving your data problems". Best practice SOA architecture includes a data aggregation/abstraction layer that provides loosely coupled data access and management of data for higher-level services. David's SOA Meta-model, which can be found here, shows how this layer fits into an SOA. Although it is not yet the most common practice, the best outcomes I have seen from SOA implementations were from those projects that started with the data layer and took the aggregation/abstraction approach. Those projects were completed faster and have truly acheived the desired agility.
